Your 5-year old is likely writing his name, copying some letters and expressing interest in simple picture books that are easier for him to read. He is intrigued by words that rhyme and words that begin with the same sound (letter). Your child might be an early reader but more likely, he is still working on this skill. Writing precedes reading. By 6, he will know the sounds that go with each letter. As he ages between 5 and 6 he will begin sounding out words. Continue to make time to read to your active child as he will be paying more close attention to the combination of letters to make words and words to make sentences.
