By age 2 children have developed the foundation that underlies speech and language. They are absorbing much more from the world than you realize. Until age 3, children understand many more words than they can say so it is important that you continue to expose them to new words in different contexts and that you continue to introduce them to more complex uses of these words. Reading makes this job easy for you.
As you read, point to the objects you are reading about – this simple act makes the connection between spoken and written word, and begins to lay the groundwork for early literacy.
